Whew, the tea is HOT hunny! The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is the epic life story of Hollywood’s most iconic film actress, 79 year old Evelyn Hugo. Evelyn has had quite the drama, and husbands, over the course of her career and she hasn't sat down with a reporter in decades. All of a sudden she's ready to tell her life story, and she only wants to talk to one reporter to write her biography and its someone she's never met before. This is where things get good, yall!
When Monique Grant learns Ms. Hugo has chosen her for the position, she is shocked. Monique is an unknown reporter for a popular magazine and has no idea why Evelyn would choose her. She's still wet behind her ears and has no experience writing a biography. Regardless, Monique is determined to use this experience to jump start her career. But Evelyn has her own agenda as well. When she reveals she has ulterior motives, Monique is even more perplexed and can’t help but think, “Why me?”
Over the course of two weeks, Monique makes her way to Evelyn’s luxurious penthouse each morning to listen to the actress bare her soul so that she can write a story that accurately depicts her life. Everyone wants to know about those seven, yes I said seven, husbands. Who was her true love? Was it the actor who dominated Hollywood during its golden age? Was it the producer she had her only child with? Or perhaps it was the French director responsible for reviving her career.
Evelyn takes Monique through a bit of a mind fuck if I'm being honest. She spills ALL the tea, but she does so in bits and pieces and it makes Monique a bit crazy, especially once she learns their lives have intersected in a tragic and irrevocable way, and the circumstances will change everything Monique thought to be true about her own life.
